Dynamic Content for your Site through Sidebars

A Sidebar is a group of modules that appear on one side of your website. You can create modules of your own and add content that you would like to appear in the Sidebar on all pages of your website.

Applications such as Photos and Videos also create sidebar modules automatically, and display the most recent activity within those applications to your site visitors.

What can I do with Sidebars?

Your Sidebar is an excellent way of adding additional personal and/or quick informative touches to your site. There’s almost no limit to what you can do with your Sidebar:

  • Information about your site, like mission statement or logo
  • Login for your members
  • Recent Blog posts
  • Items for sale
  • Custom widgets
What is the difference between my Sidebar and my Navigational Menu?

In some cases, your Sidebar and navigational menu (also known as your navbar) will appear on the same area of your site’s template. It all depends on what template you’re using. Some templates are designed with a horizontal navbar along the top with the Sidebar on the side.

Other templates are designed with the navbar along the side, so it shares a column with your Sidebar.

Add Sidebars

On new accounts, by default sidebars are turned on. Older accounts may need to activate Sidebars in order to start adding content to them.

To customize your Sidebar, hover the area where your Sidebar would appear on your website while you're inside of the SiteBuilder. A black box will appear that prompts you to "Click to manager Sidebar." Selecting this will take you to your Edit Sidebar page.

You can also access your Sidebar from your Site Settings page under "More Settings" on the right column.

Edit Sidebars

The Edit Sidebar page is where you can add, edit, or remove Sidebar modules. If you already have applications like Blog, Photo Gallery, or Web Store installed, you will notice the Sidebar will display either “recent” or “featured” updates to those areas of your site. Each of these is called a Module.

What you can do here:

  • Decide which modules will appear on your homepage, the other pages of your site, both or none at all.
  • Edit the module by clicking the pencil icon.
  • Re-order your modules with the green UP and DOWN arrows.
  • Delete the module from you Sidebar.
  • Add a new Widget Module or a Custom Module.

Widget Modules and Custom Modules

Aside from the modules that are automatically added to your Sidebar, you can add widgets and other personalized features.

Widget Module

The Widget Module option allows you to add little applications called widgets to your sidebars. The widgets include:

  • PayPal buttons
  • News and weather
  • Share and bookmark tools
  • and more

Add a Widget Module

  1. In the Site Manager select Edit Sidebars from the Jump to: drop down
  2. From the Edit Sidebar page click the Widget Module button to choose from a variety of useful and fun features to add to your site
  3. Modify the widget's settings and save your changes to add the widget to your sidebar

Custom Module

If you want to include your own code like logos, slogans or other custom elements and information that aren’t widgets, then choose Custom Module. You can create your own sidebar module in rich text or HTML.

Note: when posting custom HTML code into your Sidebar, you are responsible for how it works.

Tip: Make sure to click Save your Changes at the bottom of the Sidebar editor before you click Done to go back to the Site Builder.
